When veins of mithral are exposed to necromantic energies, like from dark rituals held in vicinity, or from large necropolises nearby, it can turn into a more death-affiliated variety of itself, called dark mithral. Thus, it is usually mined by undead and necromancers and used by champions of these unholy beings. Dark mithral possesses all the game-relevant qualities of normal mithral, but being subsumed with negative energy, this blackened metal possesses some special properties on its own, when it is enchanted.

Dark Mithral Armor

Armor made from dark mithral grants +1 turn resistance and a +1 bonus to the save DC of all necromancy spells cast by its wearer and of necromantic spell-like and supernatural abilities innate to its wearer (such as energy drain, death effects, certain types of ability drain etc.)

Dark Mithral Weapons

Weapons fashioned from dark mithral inflict an additional +1 point of negative energy damage against living beings. All weapons with a blade or head made from metal can profit from this ability, even if otherwise not primarily made from metal (in which case only the weapons weight is not halved).

Costs and Creation of Dark Mithral Items

Armors and shields made from dark mithral cost the same as those made from normal mithral, weapons made from dark mithral add 1,500 gp to their total cost. Weapons and armors fashioned from dark mithral are always masterwork items as well; the masterwork cost is included in the price given above. However, dark mithral unfolds it special properties which differ from those of normal mithral only if enchanted, so an item must at least be enchanted with a +1 enhancement bonus for its wielder to make full use of its capabilities.
